A mobile broadband connection can offer a powerful, high-quality connection, and you can access it on the go. However, this type of service is only for the internet so it’s not used to make phone calls unless you’re using VoIP.

What is the difference between mobile broadband and wireless broadband?

Mobile broadband and wireless broadband both use the same type of reception towers for the internet on your mobile phone. This can be 3G, 4G, or 5G.

However, home wireless uses a dedicated modem for multiple devices. While it’s true you can take your wireless broadband modem with you, you need a power socket to use the internet so it’s not really a portable option.

On the other hand, mobile broadband is designed to be mobile. You can use a USB dongle, a Wi-Fi device, in-car Wi-Fi, or a data-only SIM card for your tablet on the go. Both options offer similar speeds and are easy to set up in minutes.

What device do I need to use for Mobile Broadband?

You can use the following to connect to your mobile internet:

  • a USB dongle for your laptop
  • a Wi-Fi device (portable hotspot)
  • in-car Wi-Fi
  • a data-only SIM card for your tablet or other device

A USB dongle plugs directly into your computer, laptop, or tablet and you’re connected immediately.

With a personal Wi-Fi device, you get a small box that gives you a hot spot for connecting multiple devices.

In-car Wi-Fi devices plug right into your car’s 12V adapter. Multiple devices can connect on this single device.

If you use a data-only SIM card, you’d use it like a mobile phone SIM card, such as by inserting it into a compatible tablet.

While it’s important to note that you won’t be able to make standard voice calls or send SMS text messages, you can still access internet-based messaging platforms, such as Facebook and WhatsApp, as an easy alternative.
